New Year, Old Friends: Making the Most of Winter in Canon City and Florence
As we settle into January 2026, the brisk mountain air and the dusting of snow on the Sangre de Cristo Mountains remind us why we love calling the Royal Gorge region home. Whether you’ve lived in Fremont County for decades or recently moved here to enjoy a quieter pace of life, this season is the perfect time to reconnect with our community.
From the "Antique Capital" charm of Florence to the historic streets of Canon City, there is plenty to keep us active, social, and warm. Here are a few local highlights to put on your calendar this month.
Celebrate Colorado’s Big Birthday
2026 is a historic year for our state! On Wednesday, January 21, at 4:30 p.m., head over to the Gateway Depot & Plaza (816 Royal Gorge Blvd) for the kickoff of Colorado’s 150th Anniversary and the nation's 250th. This free event is a wonderful way to learn about the "Twin Anniversaries" and see how our local history plays a part in the bigger story of the West.
Socialize and Stay Active
Keeping active during the winter months doesn’t have to mean braving the wind on Skyline Drive. Our local senior centers are buzzing with activity:
-
Canon City Golden Age Center: Stop by for the "Koffee Klub" or join a pool tournament. If you need a lift, their Fremont County Transit service is a lifesaver for getting to appointments or just getting out of the house.
-
Florence Community Center: Known for its Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday lunches, it’s the best place to catch up with neighbors. Don’t miss the White Elephant BINGO (every 2nd Tuesday) or the Wednesday morning Coffee Chat from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
-
The Arts in Florence: If you prefer indoor exploring, the Bell Tower Cultural Center continues to host art exhibitions and classes that are perfect for picking up a new hobby this year.
Winter Sightseeing Without the Chill
For a truly relaxing afternoon, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad is running its winter schedule. There is something magical about sitting in a heated Vista Dome car with a warm drink, watching the Arkansas River flow past the 1,000-foot granite walls while you enjoy a gourmet lunch. It’s a great way to show off our "backyard" to visiting family without having to hike in the cold.
